Sources we use
In rough order of how much weight they get:
- The International Residential Code (IRC) and other model codes, by section number
- Manufacturer installation instructions and product spec sheets
- Government and university sources, such as the EPA, the Department of Energy and extension services
- Trade associations and their published standards
- Cost surveys and contractor price data, always with the date we checked them
Each guide lists its main sources at the end. Where codes or products vary by region, the guide says so, and your local building department has the final word.
How we use AI tools
We use AI tools to help gather questions, outline guides and write first drafts. A draft is not a guide. A person checks every number, code section and claim against the sources, rewrites what's unclear and removes anything we can't back up before the guide is released to search engines.
Prices
Prices are national ranges for the United States in U.S. dollars, with the date they were checked. Local labor, material and permit costs can be well outside those ranges. Get written quotes before you decide.
Independence
No company pays to appear in a guide, and we don't accept free products in exchange for coverage. When we name a brand, it's because it's common or useful as an example.
Updates and corrections
Guides show the date they were last changed. We only change that date when the content changes. If you find an error, tell us; we fix confirmed errors and note significant corrections in the guide.
