About Roof to Footing

Roof to Footing is an independent website about the outside of the house. It covers the parts that keep weather out and water moving: the roof and its flashing, gutters and downspouts, siding and soffit, the chimney, the foundation, the driveway and the yard, plus the heating and cooling equipment that sits outside.

Why it exists

Good answers to questions like "how low can a metal roof go?" or "what does a horizontal crack in my basement wall mean?" are out there, but they're split across code books, manufacturer PDFs and long forum threads. Each guide here pulls the useful numbers into one page and links to where they came from, so you can check them.

What we are not

We're not your contractor, engineer or inspector, and a web page can't see your house. Use the guides to understand the options and ask better questions. For structural, gas and electrical work, or when a permit is involved, bring in a licensed pro.

How the site is paid for

The site may show advertising. Advertisers don't choose topics, see guides before they're published, or pay to be mentioned. We don't sell products or take referral fees for the brands we name.
